Planting Depth and Bean Seed Sprouting
Easy
How deep should you bury a seed? You plant ten bean seeds at each of four depths in potting soil. The shallowest group sits under 2 cm. The deepest sits under 8 cm. You water every morning and evening.
The results show a clear pattern. At 2 cm and 4 cm, eight out of ten seeds sprout. At 6 cm only one seed sprouts. At 8 cm none sprout at all. Seeds buried too deep cannot push through the soil to reach sunlight.
Hypothesis
The hypothesis is that the best depth for growing bean plants in potting soil is 4cm.
Science Concepts Learned
Planting Depth
How deep a seed sits in the soil decides whether it can sprout at all. When you plant ten bean seeds at 2 cm and again at 4 cm, eight out of ten sprout at each depth. At 6 cm, only one makes it through. At 8 cm, none sprout — the seed cannot push through that much potting soil to reach sunlight.
Method & Materials
You will plant 10 seeds in four different depths of potting soil, water them every morning and night, and observe the results.
You will need potting soil, 10 bean seeds, and four pots.

The results showed that the pot with 4cm of soil had 8 seeds germinate out of the 10 seeds that were planted, while the pot with 8cm of soil had no seeds germinate.
Why do this project?
This science project is interesting because it explores the depths of potting soil to find out which is best for growing bean plants.
Also Consider
Experiment variations to consider include planting different types of seeds and using different types of soil.
