Oil Spill Cleanup with Cotton and Foil
Easy
What happens when oil spills into water? Real cleanup crews use skimmers and absorbent materials. You can model this process at home.
Shape a small piece of aluminum foil into a canoe. Fill it with cooking oil and float it in a baking dish of water. Tip it over to create your own spill.
Use cotton balls or torn paper towels to soak up the oil. The fibers absorb it the same way real crews use absorbent pillows. Try containing the spill with a loop of string to see how floating booms work.
Hypothesis
The hypothesis is that a vegetable oil spill can be cleaned up using a tanker made of aluminum foil and absorbent materials.
Method & Materials
You will shape a small piece of aluminum foil into a canoe, fill it with cooking oil, and float it on a baking dish half full of water. Then, you will use cotton balls or a ripped piece of paper towel to soak up the oil.
You will need a small piece of aluminum foil, cooking oil, a baking dish half full with water, and cotton balls or a ripped piece of paper towel.

Through this experiment, you will learn how to make a tanker and clean up a vegetable oil "spill." You will observe that absorbent materials like cotton balls or paper towel can be used to soak up the oil.
Why do this project?
This science project is interesting and unique because it teaches students how to clean up a vegetable oil "spill" using materials that are easily accessible.
Also Consider
Experiment variations to consider include using different types of absorbent materials, such as sponges or sawdust, and using different types of oil, such as vegetable or motor oil.
