Smell and Flavor Perception
Easy
Can you tell an apple from a pear if you cannot smell either one? Your nose contributes far more to flavor than most people realize. Blocking it changes what you taste.
You blindfold a volunteer and have them hold their nose. Then you offer slices of similar foods and ask them to identify each one. Try apple versus pear first. Then test with baby food flavors or jelly beans. Those work well because their textures are nearly identical. Touch gives no clues.
Repeat each test with the nose unpinched and compare the results. The difference in accuracy shows how much of what you call "taste" actually comes from your sense of smell.
Hypothesis
The hypothesis is that the sense of smell affects how food tastes.
Method & Materials
You will blindfold someone and have them hold their nose while tasting different foods. Then you'll compare the results to see if the nose has an effect on taste.
You will need foods to taste (fruit or vegetable slices, baby food, jelly beans), and a blindfold.
Results
The results of this experiment show that the sense of smell does have an effect on how food tastes. The person who was blindfolded and holding their nose was not able to distinguish between the different foods as easily as when they were able to use their sense of smell.
Why do this project?
This science project is interesting and unique because it allows students to explore the connection between smell and taste.
Also Consider
Experiment variations to consider include testing different types of food, or testing with different numbers of people.
