Antimicrobial Surfaces
Antimicrobial Surfaces is a term for materials that kill or stop germs from growing on them.
Think of it this way
One cutting board has a special coating that kills germs on contact. The other is plain wood, and germs sit and grow on its top. After you cut raw meat, the plain board stays dirty even after a quick rinse. The coated board stops germs from taking hold at all.
Explaining antimicrobial surfaces by grade level
Some cutting boards can fight germs on their own. Wood has tiny holes that trap germs and dry them out. Plastic boards are smooth, so germs can live on top longer. The board you pick for food prep matters for staying healthy.
