Body Mass Index
Body Mass Index is a number that compares your weight to your height to check body size.
Two jars sit side by side on a counter. Both hold the same amount of water. One jar is short and wide, the other is tall and narrow. The water level sits much higher in the narrow jar. BMI works the same way, the same weight fills space differently depending on how tall you are.
Explaining body mass index by grade level
You can weigh yourself and measure how tall you are. A simple math formula uses both numbers to get a score. A high score means you weigh a lot for your height. A low score means you weigh less for your height.
Projects that explore body mass index
Body mass index (BMI) compares weight to height in a single number, making it easy to compare body size across many people. You measure the height and weight of 200 participants aged 15 to 18, then calculate each person's BMI to find out who is obese. Because BMI reduces two measurements into one value, you can compare obesity rates across four groups.
Body mass index (BMI) compares weight to height in a single number, giving each participant one value that summarizes body size. You survey 200 participants aged 15 to 18 about their weekly gaming time, sort them into four groups by hours played, then measure each person's height and weight to calculate their BMI.
