Camouflage

Camouflage is the way an animal uses colors or patterns to blend in and hide from other animals.

Think of it this way

Green grapes sitting in a bowl of green grapes are very hard to spot. Each grape looks the same color and size as all the others around it. A red grape in the same bowl stands out right away. An animal that matches its background blends in the same way.

Explaining camouflage by grade level

Some moths have wings that look just like tree bark. When a moth sits on a tree, birds have a hard time seeing it. If the moth lands on a light-colored tree, dark wings stand out and birds find it fast. Matching the background helps the moth stay safe.
