Deforestation
Deforestation is cutting down or clearing large areas of trees and not planting new ones.
Think of it this way
A full tray of cups sits on a kitchen counter. Each cup holds water and keeps the tray from tipping. You remove cup after cup and set them aside, leaving the tray bare. Now nothing holds the water in place, and the surface below is dry and exposed.
Explaining deforestation by grade level
Trees hold soil in place with their roots. When people cut down many trees, rain washes the dirt away. The ground gets bare and plants cannot grow back fast. Animals that lived in those trees lose their homes.
