Ion
Ion is an atom that has gained or lost a tiny charged part, making it able to carry electricity.
Think of it this way
A bowl of water holds salt crystals. Each crystal breaks apart when it hits the water. One piece keeps a tiny extra charge — it becomes an ion. It can now carry that charge through the liquid.
Explaining ion by grade level
Salt water carries power that plain water cannot. The salt breaks into tiny bits with charge. These charged bits move through the water. That moving charge is what makes the spark.
