Launch Angle

Launch Angle is how high or low you aim when you throw or launch something.

Think of it this way

When you pour juice from a pitcher, the angle you tilt it changes where the stream lands. Tilt it low and the juice falls close to the glass. Tilt it high and the stream arcs far out before it drops down. Launch angle works the same way — it controls how far and high an object travels through the air.

Explaining launch angle by grade level

When you throw a ball, you can aim it high up or more flat. Try throwing a javelin straight forward, then try aiming it higher. The one you aim up a bit goes much farther. Where you point it before you let go changes how far it lands.

Javelin Release Angle and Distance

Aim too high or too low and a javelin loses distance. Three trained athletes each throw a javelin at six different angles ranging from 20 to 45 degrees, while a video camera records every throw so the actual release angle can be measured on playback. For all three athletes, the longest throws consistently happen at a 35-degree release angle. Throws above or below that point cover less ground, confirming that a specific launch angle maximizes range — and that the optimal angle is not the steepest one.
