Sound Absorption
Sound Absorption is what happens when a soft material soaks up noise instead of bouncing it back.
Think of it this way
A thick towel laid across a hard counter soaks up water instead of letting it splash back. Sound works the same way in a soft room. Hard walls bounce sound waves back like a tile floor bounces water drops. Soft walls, like foam or carpet, soak the waves in, so the sound fades out fast.
Explaining sound absorption by grade level
Think about a loud road near your home. A thick wall can block the noise, but soft things soak it up. A hard wall bounces sound back at you. A soft wall traps the sound inside it, so less noise gets through.
