Volcanic Eruptions

Volcanic eruptions are events where hot melted rock, gases, and ash burst out from inside Earth.

Think of it this way

A pot of thick oatmeal sits on a hot stove. Heat builds up under the heavy surface and pushes steam up through gaps. When enough heat gathers, hot oatmeal bursts up and spills over the rim. The pot is like Earth, the oatmeal is the hot melted rock inside, and the rim is where it all comes out.

Explaining volcanic eruptions by grade level

Deep under the ground, rocks get so hot they melt. This melted rock is called magma. When magma pushes up through a crack in the ground, it comes out as lava. Gas and ash shoot into the sky. That is a volcanic eruption. The lava cools down and turns into hard rock again.
