Soil Pollution Science Fair Project

Plant Roots and Copper Removal from Soil

Hard
Plant Roots and Copper Removal from Soil | Science Fair Projects | STEM Projects
Can a plant pull copper out of contaminated soil? Some plants absorb heavy metals through their roots in a process called phytoremediation (using plants to clean up pollution). Copper is useful to plants in small amounts. Too much copper damages root systems and stunts growth. Yet certain species bind the excess and remove it. You design an experiment to test how well different plants take up copper from soil treated with copper sulfate solution. The setup also lets you measure the role of soil and microorganisms separately from the plant itself. A copper test kit tracks how much copper remains in the soil after the plants grow. The results show whether living roots can measurably reduce copper levels.

Hypothesis

The hypothesis is that plants can be used to remove copper from soil.

Method & Materials

You will design an experiment to explore how plants can be used to remove copper from soil.
You will need distilled water, copper sulfate, a copper test kit, plastic soda bottles, a flask, potting soil, seeds, paper towels, and plastic pipettes.

Results

The experiment showed that plants can be used to remove copper from soil. The results showed that the plants were able to absorb the copper from the soil, which could help reduce the amount of copper in the environment.

Why do this project?

This science project is unique because it explores how plants can be used to clean up pollutants from the environment.

Also Consider

Experiment variations to consider include testing different types of plants to see which are best for phytoremediation, and testing different chemicals to see which can be best removed from the soil by phytoremediation.
