Rats and Wire Chewing Preferences
Hard
Do rats prefer to chew certain types of wire over others? Rats gnaw constantly to keep their teeth from growing too long. When wires cross their path, some types get bitten and others stay untouched.
You place six wire types in a cage with three hungry rats. These range from thin telephone wire to thick power cable. After 24 hours, you inspect each wire for bite marks. You then repeat the test with live current running through the wires.
The rats chewed telephone and PVC wires both with and without current. They ignored the thicker cables entirely.
Hypothesis
The hypothesis is that rats prefer to chew on telephone and PVC wires.
Science Concepts Learned
Rodent Behavior
Rats gnaw constantly to keep their teeth from growing too long, so the materials they encounter in their environment directly shape what they chew. You place six wire types in a cage with three hungry rats — ranging from thin telephone wire to thick power cable — and leave them for 24 hours. Then you inspect each wire for bite marks. Next, you repeat the test with live current running through the wires. The rats chewed telephone and PVC wires both with and without current. They ignored the thicker cables entirely.
Method & Materials
You will place three rats in a cage without food for one day, then pass different types of wires through the grills of the cage and leave them there for 24 hours. The next day, the wires will be inspected for bite marks.
You will need three rats, a rat trap (cage-type), telephone wire, coaxial cable, red PVC wire, black PVC wire, a 3 core power cable, speaker wire, and a rubber mat.

It was observed that the rats preferred to bite the telephone cables and the PVC wires with or without current flowing in them. The hypothesis that rats prefer to bite telephone and PVC wires was proven to be true.
Why do this project?
This science project is interesting because it explores why rats chew on wires and what can be done to prevent it.
Also Consider
Variations of this science project could include using different types of animals like mice or squirrels, or using different types of wires such as Teflon coated wires.
