Ring Finger Length and Athletic Ability in Girls
Easy
Does finger length predict how athletic someone is? Research suggests that a longer ring finger compared to the index finger may be linked to higher athletic ability. You can test this with just a ruler.
You measure the index and ring fingers of 10 athletic girls from school sports teams. Then you measure the same fingers on 10 non-athletic girls of the same age.
Most of the athletic girls had longer ring fingers on both hands. Most of the non-athletic girls had ring and index fingers of equal length.
Hypothesis
The hypothesis is that most of the athletic girls will have ring fingers that are longer than their index fingers.
Method & Materials
You will select 10 athletic girls and 10 non-athletic girls, measure the length of their index and ring fingers, and compare the results.
You will need a ruler and 10 athletic girls and 10 non-athletic girls, all aged 15 years old.
Results
The results showed that most of the athletic girls had longer ring fingers than index fingers, while the non-athletic girls had ring and index fingers of the same length. This suggests that the finger length ratio can be used to identify potential athletes.
Why do this project?
This science project is interesting because it shows that something as simple as the length of a person's fingers can tell us a lot about their athletic abilities.
Also Consider
Variations of this experiment could include comparing the finger length ratio of athletes in different areas of sports, or repeating the experiment with male athletes. Additionally, the experiment could be done to compare toe length and athletic abilities.
