Flat vs. Dome Drain Covers and Clogging
Medium
Why do flat drain covers clog so easily during heavy rain? You build two wire-mesh covers for the same drain hole: one flat and one shaped like a dome over a small bowl.
You set up a tilted gutter and pour pails of water mixed with four types of debris:
- Dried leaves
- Grass
- Soil
- Plastic wrappers
For each type you check whether the cover clogs or lets water pass. Compare the results to see which shape keeps the drain clear.
Hypothesis
The hypothesis is that the dome-shaped drain cover will be less likely to become clogged by debris.
Method & Materials
You will set up a gutter with a drain hole, place two stools and two bricks underneath it, and pour pails of water mixed with different types of debris into the gutter. You will also cut two pieces of wire mesh to use as the flat and dome-shaped drain covers.
You will need a 2 meter long gutter with a drain hole, two stools, two bricks, four pails of water mixed with dried leaves, grass, soil, and plastic wrappers, a roll of wire mesh, a small bowl, a pair of scissors, and an empty pail.

The results showed that the dome-shaped drain cover was more effective in stopping debris from entering the drain hole, while the flat drain cover was completely clogged by larger debris.
Why do this project?
This science project is interesting because it shows how different shapes of drain covers can affect the flow of water and debris.
Also Consider
Consider repeating this science project using different types of debris such as paper, rocks, broken branches, or sand. You can also repeat the experiment using cone-shaped, pyramid-shaped, or box-shaped drain hole covers.
