Science Fair Project Description

Video games are very popular, especially among young people. While playing video games, many of us become very alert and focused as they attempt to complete the game successfully. In this experiment, you will determine how blood pressure is affected by playing video games, both alone and in competition with other players.
Complexity level:4
Time required:Consider the time needed to get materials, finding participants, and carrying out experiment.

Overview

Video games are extremely popular, especially among young people. While playing, many gamers are focused and alert as they compete against the game or other players. As success requires quick reaction time, how is blood pressure affected by playing video games?

Scientific Terms

Blood Pressure

Materials

  • Video games
  • Sphygmomanometer (the instrument used by doctors to take your blood pressure).
  • Stethoscope
  • Data sheet (provided).
  • Participants (six or more).

Procedure

Part I

  1. Have a participant get into a relaxed state. They may want to lie down or sit in a comfortable chair.
  2. Take the participant?s blood pressure
  3. Record the information on the data sheet. This score will serve as a baseline to compare the blood pressure levels after playing.
  4. Allow the participant to play one video game without being tested. This will allow participant to get use to the game and the experimental setting.
  5. After the second game, take the participant?s blood pressure.
  6. Record this information in the data sheet.
  7. Repeat this process with the remaining participants.

Part II

  1. After each participant has been tested, repeat the experiment with participants playing in pairs, so that they are competing against each other.
  2. How do the participants blood pressure levels compare with their baseline?
  3. Form a conclusion to the experiment's findings.
