Soil Communities and Hidden Organisms

Medium
Soil Communities and Hidden Organisms | Science Fair Projects | STEM Projects
How many different organisms share a single handful of soil? You start by listing familiar living things found in five communities: home, farm, forest, ocean, and pond. For each organism, you decide whether it is a producer (makes its own food) or a consumer (eats other things). Then you dig into a real soil sample. You spread the soil on newspaper and use a hand lens to find every tiny creature hiding inside. Small organisms go into jars of alcohol so you can study them later under a microscope. By the end, you have a table showing which organisms appear in each community and how producers and consumers share the same space.

Hypothesis

The hypothesis is that different communities have different organisms.

Method & Materials

You will collect soil samples, observe and identify organisms, and distinguish between producers and consumers.
You will need soil samples, newspaper, vials, a hand lens, and four small jars with covers.

Results

Through this project, you will gain a better understanding of the organisms that live in different communities. You will also learn how to distinguish between producers and consumers. One interesting observation is that producers are usually green in color and are capable of producing their own food, while consumers are usually brown or other colors and cannot manufacture their own food.

Why do this project?

This science project is interesting and unique because it allows students to explore different communities and identify the organisms that live there.

Also Consider

Experiment variations to consider include collecting soil samples from different locations and comparing the organisms found in each sample, or comparing the organisms found in different types of communities.
